Proposing solutions, Cuonzo writes, is a natural response to paradoxes. Cuonzo offers a catalog of paradox-solving strategies -- including the Preemptive-Strike (questioning the paradox itself), the Odd-Guy-Out (calling one of the assumptions into question), and the You-Can't-Get-There-from-Here (denying the validity of the reasoning). She argues that certain types of solutions work better in some contexts than others, and that as paradoxicality increases, the success of certain strategies grows more unlikely. Cuonzo shows that the processes of paradox generation and solution proposal are interesting and important ones. Discovering a paradox leads to advances in knowledge: new science often stems from attempts to solve paradoxes, and the concepts used in the new sciences lead to new paradoxes. As Niels Bohr wrote, "How wonderful that we have met with a paradox. Now we have some hope of making progress."

Early in the twentieth century, Winston Churchill called Uganda the 'pearl of Africa'. It became independent from British colonial rule in 1962 amid high hopes on all sides. Yet from the mid-1960s onwards, and most spectacularly after the seizure of power by army chief Idi Amin in 1971, the country plunged into an orgy ethnic violence, wholesale disregard for the rule of law, and economic chaos - hardly alleviated after the fall of Amin and return to power of the country's first President, Milton Obote, and the latter's overthrow and replacement by the Okellos. Under the National Resistance Movement led by Yoweri Museveni, the country - exhausted, impoverished and demoralized - has begun a move backwards towards constitutionalism and democracy.

The author of this book is a former head of the department of History at Makerere University, and at the time of publication is a member o Uganda's Constitutional Commission. His immediate family suffered during the country's years of strife on a scale that that recalls European Jewish families during the Nazi Holocaust. He has therefore approached his task of recounting and analyzing the history of Uganda since independence 'as it really happened' with the agonizing knowledge of an insider, and with the passionate ideal of service to his fellow Ugandans. For, he argues, if they cannot achieve a sympathetic as well as a coherent understanding of the roots of the ills that have plagued their country since independence, there can never be reconciliation and reconstruction.

The account begins with a survey of the country's history before independence, and ends with an analysis of the Museveni years - calmer than the preceding two decades but still checkered - during which efforts have been made internally to put Uganda back on the right track and to recover its former character. The book has been long in preparation, and will now be welcomed for its clear-sightedness and honesty.

About the Author
Phares Mukasa Mutibwa was born in July 1936 in Bulemezi county, now part of Luwero district in the former Kingdom of Buganda, and educated at Ndejje Secondary School, King's College Budo and Makerere University. He served as a diplomat at Uganda's Foreign Service for two years, before joining Makerere University as lecturer in history. After obtaining his Ph.D. at the University of Sussex, England, he was promoted to a senior lectureship at Makerere, and was Professor and Head of Department of the History Department there in 1976-7 and 1979-83. He has served as professor at the Universities of Nairobi and Swaziland. He was Director of Research and Political Affairs in the National Resistance Movement (the ruling party in Uganda, since 1986) and is currently a member of the Uganda Constitutional Commission.

Besides articles in learned journals, Professor Mutibwa is the author of "The Malagasy and the Europeans" (Longman, 1974) and "African Heritage and the New Africa (East African Literature Bureau, 1977) and co-author of "A Century of Christianity in Uganda, 1877-1977" (Uzima Press, 1978). Since 1975 he has been a member of UNESCO's International Scientific Committee for its "General History of Africa", contributing a chapter on Madagascar to volume VI.

About the Author

Francisco M. Gonzalez-Longatt is currently a Lecturer in Electrical Power System at Electrical Power System en School of Electronic, Electrical and Systems Engineering en Loughborough University, United Kingdom. His academic qualifications include first Class Electrical Engineering of Instituto Universitario Politécnico de la Fuerza Armada Nacional, Venezuela (1994), Master of Business Administration (Honors) of Universidad Bicentenaria de Aragua, Venezuela (1999), Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Professional Practice of Coventry University, UK (2013) and PhD in Electrical Power Engineering from the Universidad Central de Venezuela (2008). He is former associate professor (1995-2009) and Head (1999-2001) of the Department of Electrical Engineering of Universidad Nacional Politécnico de la Fuerza Armada Nacional, Venezuela (1995-2009).

He is a former academic staff of Department of Aerospace, Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University of Coventry, UK, where he started as Lecturer in Electrical Engineering in 2012 and promoted to Senior Lecturer in Electrical Engineering in 2013. He was formerly with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Manchester, UK, as Postdoctoral Research Associate (2009-2011).

He is Vice-President of Venezuelan Wind Energy Association, Senior Member of the IEEE, member of The Institution of Engineering and Technology - The IET (UK) and member of International Council on Large Electric Systems -CIGRE. His research interest includes innovative (operation/control) schemes to optimize the performance of future energy systems.

José Luis Rueda Torres was born on March 26th, 1980 in Ecuador. In August 2004, he received the Electrical Engineer diploma from Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Quito, Ecuador, with cum laude honors. From September 2003 till February 2005, he worked in Ecuador, in the fields of industrial control systems and electrical distribution networks operation and planning. In November 2009, he received the Ph.D. degree from the National University of San Juan, obtaining the highest mark Sobresaliente (Outstanding). He has been with the Institute of Electrical Engineering at University Duisburg-Essen as postdoctoral research associate since August 2009. Dr. Rueda will join the staff of the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy at Delft University of Technology as Assistant Professor of Intelligent Electrical Power Grids from March 2014.

He is member of Colegio de Ingenieros Eléctricos y Electrónicos de Pichincha (CIEEPI), Ecuador, and senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). His current research interests include smart grids, power system modeling, power system planning, power system stability and control, system identification, probabilistic and artificial intelligent methods, and renewable energy technologies.
