If you want to know about typesetting, this is the book for you. Very, very informative book. What makes this book one of the best 'what's it all about' ones I've ever read on any subject is the clarity, humor and - speaking sincerely - the elegance of the presentation.I had originally wanted to purchase (which has not arrived yet), but in reading the reviews of Just My Type, which is an account of fonts, I encountered numerous recommendations and citations of this one, which is written by a typesetting expert. The story of how the book came to be is pretty interesting.The book itself talks about different types of situations - say, where you want a tall, skinny swath of text and you wish to avoid what they call 'rivers' - those strips of white that develop as spaces between words as they pile up one atop the other. There's a way to tweak the font to change that. He has examples of what fonts work for what application. For example, if you have a patch of text in a fairly small size, you don't want to use something like Chilada (hint: it works well for Southwest Food-themed applications) and would do better to stick with Times New Roman or Tahoma.Well, it was fascinating for me. But then I do some of my own graphic design and formatting, and it's just interesting to read. For example, do you know where the terms 'upper case' and 'lower case' come from? Well, the capital letters ('upper case') type (the pieces set into the press) were generally kept on a top shelf and the 'lower case' ones were kept on a lower shelf.Mr. Williams writes well and with humor. The illustrations are very good, and even if you don't plan to set up a printing press or design books, you may very well enjoy this book and read it just for the fun of it.

I thought this would be a much more comprehensive exposition of good typographical design, but there was very little in this book that I didn't already know, and there were quite a few handy rules of thumb that were omitted. For a total noob this would be a good resource...but frustratingly, those you most wish would read a book like this are the ones who don't even know that such an art even exists.

A nifty little reference. Sort of a pocket bible for typography. Nothing groundbreaking for people who have read a bunch on typography, but still a pleasant consolidation of information. Well bound book as well.

This is the best quick guide on typography out there. I finished the book quickly and gained a lot from it. Only thing that was missing were tips on how to beautifully layout a page with text.

Great for anyone who is interested in learning the basics of typography in an engaging and exciting way. This book is so fantastic I read it in one night (but it helps that some of the typography is so large). I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to learn about typography, or any designer that needs a light refresher to feel inspired. A+!

Solid little book. Designed very well and straight forward. Some design books can get a little full of themselves and so pseudo-sophisticated they lose all of their practicality. I;ve been at it for years and still recommend this book to students and professionals alike. The only sad part is the production value - the little ribbon book markers came off as did the elastic place holder. I swear I do not juggle my books.

About the Author Robert C. Feenstra is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Davis. He received his B.A. in 1977 from the University of British Columbia, Canada, and his Ph.D. in economics from MIT in 1981. Feenstra has been teaching international trade at the undergraduate and graduate levels at UC Davis since 1986, where he holds the C. Bryan Cameron Distinguished Chair in International Economics. Feenstra is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, where he directs the International Trade and Investment research program. He is the author of Offshoring in the Global Economy and Product Variety and the Gains from Trade (MIT Press, 2010). Feenstra received the Bernhard Harms Prize from the Institute for World Economics, Kiel, Germany, in 2006, and delivered the Ohlin Lectures at the Stockholm School of Economics in 2008. The Glass Universe meticulously delineates the previously little-known story about the contributions of a group of women hired by the Harvard College Observatory as “human computers” beginning in the mid-1800’s. While Dava Sobel at times employs incredible scientific detail while relaying these women’s stories, overall The Glass Universe is a fascinating tale of the impact of a multitude of female astronomers on the field of astronomy. As the story develops, photography begins revolutionizing the field of astronomy creating a new field called spectrophotography. Accordingly, a number of these women begin studying the thousands of glass photographic plates created nightly at the observatory in Cambridge and at times from other areas including Peru and South Africa. The images created via photography magnified the views of the cosmos to degrees far beyond what the naked eye could see even with a telescope. As a result, the women (and some men too) discovered thousands of new stars, learned what stars are composed of, and characterized stars into groupings with similar traits. Sobel also pays tribute to the individuals who funded much of this research including Anna Draper whose husband was on the forefront of spectrophotography and sadly died young, Andrew Carnegie and Catherine Bruce, a wealthy New York socialite who came to love astronomy late in life.Because so many women participated in the development of a new understanding of the cosmos, there are a tremendous number of characters in The Glass Universe. Repeatedly while reading, I kept wishing that there was a character listing at the front of the book to help me keep track of them all. When I finished the book, I was happy to ascertain that Sovel had compiled a lengthy Catalogue of Harvard Astronomers, Assistants, and Associates at the end of the book. While it was helpful to peruse this after finishing The Glass Universe, I feel it would have been more useful at the front of the book instead of after I was finished reading. At the end of the book, Sobel also includes a timeline with the highlights of the Harvard College Observatory which places many of the developments and discoveries into a coherent, satisfying format.Sobel’s story is uplifting, and I loved reading about the recognition these women received at a time when women working was highly uncommon. Not only did their fellow workers at Harvard Observatory acknowledge the success and importance of these individuals, but astronomers worldwide respected and recognized the contributions made by them. I highly recommend The Glass Universe. Thanks to Viking Books and NetGalley for the chance to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Pickering and Harlow Shapley, whilenot neglecting their male contemporaries. Between the 1880s and 1910s, Harvard CollegeObservatory under Pickering arguably contributed more to the advance of astronomy than anyother single institution. By 1920 the telescopes of HCO began to be dwarfed by new large instrumentsat other institutions, but under Shapley HCO remained at the forefront of astronomical researchand education in many areas. During these years, Henrietta Leavitt discovered the Cepheid period-luminosityrelation that would be vital to determining the distances to other galaxies, Annie Jump Cannon studied the spectraof hundreds of thousands of stars, and Cecilia Payne pioneered methods for determining the chemicalcomposition of the stars. These and other stories are followed in Sobel's fascinating work.Sobel also writes of the lives and motivations of the wealthy sponsors of the observatory'sresearch, including scientifically minded women such as Anna Palmer Draper and Catherine WolfeBruce. Considering the breadth of the book, I noticed remarkably few errors, and I stronglyrecommend its story of the people of HCO and their science.

I was hoping for more from this book considering it was a 2017 New York Times Notable book than what I got. The book does describe the contributions of the many women who worked at the Harvard Observatory from the late 1800s to the early 1950s. Those contributions were significant. (Even though they were grossly underpaid for what sure seems like scut work to me.) And it was nice to see women get an opportunity in a technical field during that era. So, yes, Sobel does a good job of describing their contributions. But her narrative is on the dry side. I'm a big astronomy fan so I liked this book. But I think if you are coming at this book from the "women in science" viewpoint rather than from the science viewpoint, you're going to find this history a little tedious. Recommended for science and astronomy buffs. Recommended with reservations (for the dry narrative) for others.

This well researched book came as a revelation to me about the many women to whom we owe our modern understanding of astronomy. Dava Sobel makes the individual women and men come alive on the page. She also writes so that the lay person gains a sense of the way discoveries were made and why they were important.

Chesterton’s wit and mental nimble nature are on full display in this collection of essays from the British thinker. Most of the essays tally 4-6 pages each so this is an excellent book to be able to read in short snippets and the range of his topics is wide enough for several country roads to carry, but even as many roads may seem to take us to different places many can and often do deposit us into the same city or town even if by different direction. So too do Chesterton’s writings often pointing at the upside-down tendencies of the developed and cultured over the common man and at the heart being ensconced in the soul so as to be truly spiritual and at the idea that so much reflects the goodness of God even when the dimness of man does its dirtiest to obscure it. Even if you don’t understand every little point he throws at you and are struggling sometimes to hold onto his larger points by the end of each essay you’ll likely come away with the overall idea that he has drawn out for you. And his conversational style makes for an easy read.

Chesterton wrote about a century ago, so the average reader would be no more likely to pick up a work by him than one by Dickens or Poe or Connan Doyle. But publishers have a reason to bring these books back, and with a vengeance-- they're out of copyright, and so free game. And if you did pick up a Chesterton novel with a shiny new cover, and delved into a couple pages, you wouldn't think it was written that long ago. In fact, it seems up to date, when some stories from fifty years ago seem hopelessly dated. This odd fact, in itself, explains the explosive Chesterton revival in our day-- why reading him is spreading like wildfire, helped in no small part by voracious readers and newfound friends.Just so with the non-fiction, but to a smaller degree, for non-fiction cannot help belonging to a period, and being, in that sense, hopelessly dated. Here again, though, it happens that the particular period of GKC (Edwardian England) and our particular period have a great deal in common, and nowhere is this more evident than when reading GKC. Of course, no one is going to pick up a random book and just start reading, as they might a novel passed on by a friend. So three friends who are also friends of Chesterton's, if a century later, have ganged up to pass on their favorite bits. And yes, they are bits, for Chesterton was a master of the short essay-- yes short. In his own day, they were brief columns in newspapers, or a couple pages in magazines. Hmm, I'm thinking right about now, that might not be so bad. Most of the brief bits were later gathered into books, this being a way to sell books to readers who might have read a few columns and be thirsting for more.So, oddly enough, anyone who quotes a short bit of Chesterton today probably got it from one of these longer collections of short bits. But who wants to track down all these non-fiction collections, which run into dozens of books in the case of such a prolific author? Someone needs to find the best brief bits in those books and drag them into one book. Someone has. Or rather, three someones have. Three someones pulled together 67 favorite bits into this 380 plus page collection (yes that averages to about 5 or so pages each), and, as in the newspapers of a hundred years ago (and some later), put them once again in the view of the casual reader. Not only that, you get brief introductions by the three someones as to why they love these essays.I also love the essay, and was first introduced to it in "On Lying in Bed" (which ranks, I might add, as one of the best essays I've ever read). But decide for yourself, it's no. 8 in this volume. Which, incidentally, is ideal for those who've read some GKC novels and wonder if they dare try the non-fiction, and if so, where to start? Readers absolutely new to GKC might get addicted to not only Chesterton, but the form of the essay. And as for those of us who already have both addictions, we simply say "Thank You".
